People can be some of the hardest things to draw. This lesson started as a discussion about how to get beyond the basic "stick figure". I taught the students how to create movement in their simple gesture drawings by using diagonal lines. They spent a day drawing each other with lines and shapes. Next they selected a photograph to work from. I taught them how to check for proportion (size relationships) and how to add thickness once the gesture was finalized. They finished by adding color with chalk.

Students looked at the art of Wassily Kandinsky for inspiration. They discussed the different lines, shapes and colors in his art. They created three layers of space. A wet on wet water color technique for the background layer, shapes and lines in bright tempera paint for the middle layer and black lines for the foreground. This project introduces students to the concept of abstract art and allows them to explore the differences between watercolor and tempera paint. It is a great lesson to teach how artists create space and movement in an abstract composition. |
