Students looked at the art of Wassily Kandinsky for inspiration. They discussed the different lines, shapes and colors in his art. They created three layers of space. A wet on wet water color technique for the background layer, shapes and lines in bright tempera paint for the middle layer and black lines for the foreground. This project introduces students to the concept of abstract art and allows them to explore the differences between watercolor and tempera paint. It is a great lesson to teach how artists create space and movement in an abstract composition.
